Policy on AI-Assisted Tools

Generative AI and AI-Assisted Technology Policies

The rise of generative AI and AI-assisted technologies has prompted the development of these policies to ensure greater transparency and provide guidance to authors, reviewers, editors, readers, and contributors. As the use of these technologies grows among content creators, Research Rise will monitor developments and update policies as needed.

For Authors

Use of Generative AI and AI-Assisted Technologies in Scientific Writing

These policies pertain only to the writing process, not to the use of AI tools for data analysis or deriving insights during research.

  • Generative AI and AI-assisted tools should only enhance the readability and language quality of the work, and their use must involve human oversight and control. Authors are responsible for thoroughly reviewing and editing the output, as AI-generated content can be inaccurate, incomplete, or biased.
  • Authors must disclose their use of AI tools in their manuscript. A statement will appear in the published work to ensure transparency and foster trust among all stakeholders.
  • AI tools cannot be credited as authors or co-authors since authorship requires responsibilities that only humans can fulfill, such as ensuring content integrity, approving the final version, and guaranteeing originality. Authors should familiarize themselves with Research Rise Ethics in Publishing policy before submission.

Use of Generative AI in Figures, Images, and Artwork

  • Generative AI tools cannot be used to create or modify images in submitted manuscripts. Acceptable adjustments include changes to brightness, contrast, or color balance, provided they do not obscure original information.
  • If AI-assisted tools are used as part of the research methodology (e.g., biomedical imaging), their use must be described in the methods section, including details about the model, version, and manufacturer. Pre-AI-adjusted or raw images may be required for editorial review.
  • The use of AI tools in graphical abstracts or cover art is restricted and requires prior approval from the journal editor and publisher. Authors must ensure proper rights clearance and attribution.

For Reviewers

Confidentiality and Use of Generative AI

  • Manuscripts and review reports are confidential and must not be uploaded into AI tools, as this could breach confidentiality, proprietary rights, or data privacy laws.
  • Peer review relies on critical thinking and independent assessment, tasks beyond AI’s capabilities. Reviewers are responsible for ensuring the integrity of their reports and must avoid relying on AI-generated insights, which may be biased or inaccurate.

Research Rise Policies for Reviewers

  • Disclosures about AI use by authors are included in a dedicated section of the manuscript before the references.
  • Research Rise employs in-house, identity-protected AI tools for tasks such as plagiarism checks and reviewer identification. These tools uphold data privacy and confidentiality.

For Editors

Confidentiality and Editorial Responsibility

  • Editors must treat manuscripts and related communications as confidential and must not use AI tools to process or assess manuscripts. Using AI in this context risks generating inaccurate or biased conclusions.
  • Editors are accountable for the editorial evaluation process, final decisions, and author communication, responsibilities that require human oversight.
